Mental health problems can cause decades of disability for people in their twenties, thus taking away many years of productivity from our global economy. As such, there is a need for the prevention and treatment of these conditions.

Depression takes the second position in causative factors of disability as it largely contributes to suicides and heart diseases. Estimates show that at least one in six people has a psychological condition per week.

If we can protect the mental health of our children from an early age, we can shape their minds and help them grow into productive individuals in the society. The government is looking for ways to promote mental health in our children to ensure that they can enjoy their childhoods.

The most common conditions seen in Britain are anxiety and depression. About seven point eight percent of people in Britain show some signs of these diseases and they are eligible for therapy sessions. An average of four to ten percent of the British populace will suffer from these conditions at some point in their life.

These issues mainly affect the people who have less financial power in the world such that the poorer a person is, the higher the likelihood that they will face such conditions. The economy suffers when people experience these problems in that at least twenty percent of work days get lost as people try to deal with the symptoms of these diseases. Statistics show that at least sixteen point six seven of the British population suffers from these conditions.


In the year 2016, five thousand six hundred and sixty-eight people committed suicide in Great Britain. Three-quarters of these people were male, and the rest were female. Reports show that eighteen thousand two hundred and twenty of the deaths recorded between 2003 and 2013 were due to suicide, indicating that there is a significant population in Britain that suffers from suicidal thoughts.

For men between the ages of twenty to forty-nine in England and Wales, suicide got confirmed as one of the leading causes of their deaths. Further research shows that at least one in every fifteen people in Britain has attempted to take their life.

In Scotland, the rates of suicides rose by eight percent from 2015 to 2016 with a record showing seven hundred and twenty-eight deaths in 2016.


This condition gets caused by a disorder of the brain which is treatable. If we spent a pound on treating this disease at an early stage, we would end up saving eighteen pounds in the process. Early intervention is excellent as it is not only friendly on costs but prevents the condition from getting out of hand. Many methods can get used to deal with the disease such as regular exercise.

The losses in employment costs as a result of this disease are about thirty thousand pounds for people aged fifteen to forty-four and nineteen thousand pounds for those aged forty-five to sixty-four.

Psychological health problems limit the quality of life of those who suffer from them, and they negatively affect the economy.
